1987 560 sel, bad fuel distrubitor ?
 

I think i have a bad fuel distrubitor on my 87 560sel but am having trouble finding how hard it will be to replace. Have cd's for manuel whatever good they are but still haven't found info. also why such a big difference in the prices for the part, something i don't know ? Thanks for your input i am more stubborn that smart ! will appreicate all the help given,,,,

what is the engine not doing that you think it needs fuel distributor ?

I just got around to replaceing the fuel distrubitor with a used one for $175.00 and it runs like a top thank you for input

Still be nice for the education of others to know what your original problem was that led you to even suspect the fuel distributor. How about giving us the details?

yes, the fuel distributor, just replaced one myself last fall on a 1990 300TE. KE-5 CIS or whatever. On the 3 litre 6 the fuel distributor was incredibly simple to replace, took me less than an hour. I felt that the fuel distibutor was causing a rough idle, difficult warm start, bogging and general bullcrap. Replaced the fuel distrib and nothing changed. I was lucky enough to find a fine replacement at a local u-pick-em car yard and it was only $40....a a rebuilt one is like $450 and a new one is around $2500. So I felt $40 was fair for a hunch...anyway, didn't work. What did work was a new coolant temp sensor and a set of Copper-Plus plugs. cleaned it all right up. This was last September and I haven't touched the thing since, still runs great. I am glad I kept my old fuel distributor as it is fine and maybe it can still be of value to someone.....

DETAILS OF THE BAD FUEL DISTRUBITOR..IT would start up ok but after a while it would just go crazy.. like it had water in the gas or something. it would spit and sputter and i would have to pump the shoot out of the gas to keep it running. It would sometimes stall and i would have to let it sit. then it would start again and run ok for a while but it would happen more frequently. I also took it to two different guys that both said it was a bad fuel distrubitor. ?? how or why i don't know other that they said it was a common thing ?? A new one can list for over $2,200.00 but i looked and got a used one for $175. It took me about an hour to replace (only three screws ) and took it to get smogged the next day and it passed!! in Southern California...

examined the old fuel distributer on a friend's 560SEC , seems the rubber diaphram had gone soft and goey . I assume A used one will be that way soon due to ageing.
I guess i rebuild one is a better option as it will have a new diapgram. surely some place will have a better price.

Yabass--I noticed that you were in SoCal, I live here too. Could you tell me where you found your fuel distributor and their location?
I have 86 420 sel will probably be same as yours
