upshift delay valve

My dealer says that my '93 s320 (101,000mi) needs this replaced due to Info from check engine light. Says that it is in the tranny, but I notice a squeek form the engine compartment. Sometimes when I take off from stop and the squeek is at the time of shifting from 1st into 2nd. But after the engine is warm I do not hear the squeek any more. His cost is $995.00 any discussion/information wouild be greatly appretiated. Other wise car performs great. I am the second owner since 29,000mi. Michael

should be 94 s320

I don't think the tranny on that car even has electronics on it aside from a kickdown....MB didn't switch to a electronic trans until '96....his diagnosis sounds suspicious....so does the price....you can almost get a whole rebuilt transmission for that!

You can't get close to a real rebuilt trans for that money, but there is no part of the upshift delay system that should cost anywhere near that amount.

First rule is get the model right - no such thing as a 93 S320. Also don't take a car that old to a dealer, need to find an independent shop.

My mistake it is "94 s320

We have a local shop that will rebuild a MB trans for about $890, and they do an excellent job.

Stuff in Florida costs more than in Michigan.

If the CE code is for shift delay, it has nothing to do with the trans , it has to do with the cable and vac element that is controlled by the ECU. They hold the trans in shift delay for rapid warm-up of the Cat [ Emmissions device]
What code are you getting for CE ???

up shift delay

Thanks for your response. I do not know what code the dealers serevice man had. I will go toa local service shop that services in MB's.I have been there before for emergency work, but mostly go to my dealer. (real cuite secretaries) In fact the dealer is cheaper in a lot of general services that the local shop. Must be the mark up in parts. Any way I really appretiate your reply to my delima.

Ok
There is a common code for the upshift delay fault and if that is the code they found, then the most likely remedy is to change the kick-down cable and Vac Element ..very common...it is outside the trans and the cable sticks or the vac element no longer holds vac b/c the element leaks ...the part is listed for your chassis at the Parts Section of this Forum, but that site does not seem to be working today...maybe try it later. [ top of page]
Print that out and ask your guy if that is the code he is concerned with.

The part number for the cable is 124 270 16 73 and it has a MSRP of $190.00. Labor would be more than that but not much as a S class has enough room to exchange the cable without pulling the trans pan.
