Engine Block Drain Plug

Is there a drain plug to drain the coolant from a '87 300SDL 6 cylinder Diesel engine? If so, where is it located? I want to flush and refill the system and I can't find the drain plug.

According to service task 20-010 for the 602-603 engine(coolant drain), the coolant drain plug is on the passenger side of the motor towards the rear of the block underneath the exhaust. It looks identical in location to where MB puts the plug on the 103 gas motors. I'll bet a 19mm socket on a 1/2" ext. gets it out.

Mike,

Looks like I didn't take enough of the covers off bottom of car? I never had a car with covers under the car before. Why are the covers there? Are thy there just to kee the engine et al clean?Seems like they would make the engine run hotter in warm weather.

I'll take the other cover off today and now I now I know where to look for the drain plug. THanks for the info.

If it's where I said it is, you can see it from the top.

Pop the hood and walk around to the passenger side - right front. Look down underneath the exhaust and more towards the rear of the block. Should be a drain plug coming out the side of the engine.

Mike,

It was there where you said and easy to get at since the starter is on the other side.

It has neat plug as I didn't have to take it out, just loosen a little and out came the coolant although not much. I drained the radiator first and that got most the coolant out.

Now I am having trouble refilling it. I can't get more than 1 1/2 gallon into it. I'm going to dp another post to ask how to fill. My 300SD 5 cyliner engined filled easily.
