1996 C280 backfiring thru intake
What is the most likely cause of a violent backfire thru intake when starting cold? Has 220K miles. Plug wires have been replaced. Other than this, car runs fine.

that's a trick question...that can't happen....no way

If it backfired through the intake all of the fuel/throttle equipment would probably be toast....so I doubt that is whats happening.

I have had cars do that when the timing was WAY off (after I worked on the car...). They are usually built to tolerate that without catastrophic damage.
