rocker arms-replace or not
Mechanic rebuilding both heads on my 420sel recomends replacing all rocker arms on one side only. With 165,000miles i would think if they were bad on one side wouldent the other side be the same? He said the hard serface on some were almost worn through and recomends replacing all.[one side only]

Well, he can see them; I can't. It's pretty obvious when they're worn. I would guess it's the right side? That side usually goes first. If you don't trust his opinion, why let him work on the car?

Replace both sides while he's in there - they're not that much money.
Note: If the camshafts aren't changed, the car my "tick" when it's finished.

Why would you want to replace the camshaft and why would it tick?

Gentlemen,
Please excuse me for obviously offending your delicate sensibilities with my reply. I guess I'll never know if it was the right or left side that was in question. It will NEVER happen again. Bye, Randy D. |

I would think it a good thing for us to raise questions and offer opinions. Don't take anything for granted. Each one of us hopes that their advise/opinion is correct or at least in the right direction. None of us will be 100% correct.
But that aside, If I have a question or a problem that I am presenting to this forum, I would like a frank opinion from anyone willing. It would then be up to me to decide to act upon such. Let me filter it out. I know I don't know everything. That's why I'm asking for help. I welcome anyones opinion. ![]() That said, Why would the camshaft need to be replaced and why would a new one be expected to tick? I don't ask this because I doubt it, but because I wish to be educated. I expect that there is something I can learn here.

Re: Camshaft - ticking
I'm told that the old camshaft wears with the old rocker arms, if you change just the rocker arms, one or more of the new rocker arms may not meet up exactly the same with the old camshaft. I had this problem already, put on new rockerarms and I was left with a tick due to a worn cam lobe. Before the new rockerarms, the car purred.
