possible engine swap from 3.2 to 5.5?

I'm curious if I can change my 1999 CLK 320 engine over to an available 2002 CLK 55 engine.

Does any body know if this will work?

Sure it'll work - but the cost of engines changes for the last 10 or 15 years exceeds the price of buying the other car, and sometimes the price of buying both cars. Engine swaps are basically a thing of the past.

With the right mounts and all that the motor and tranny should drop in to the stock locations. Its all the other stuff like electronics, cooling systems, and AC that is the hardpart

If we're talking about simply dropping the AMG engine into the CLK 320, it'll probably bolt in without too much fuss. However, you'll need the ME-SFI control unit, and probably the transmission and traction control units as well. Obviously, you'll need the engine harness, and maybe the body-side harness. Do you have the AMG transmission? If not, the 55 V-8 wiil probably tear the original transmission up eventually. Same goes for the differential. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. You'll need the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) from the same car as the ME-SFI control unit came from. They're "married" together as part of the Drive Authorization Sysytem. Of course you can always buy a new EIS if the original one isn't available, but you'll need to order it using the VIN number of the donor vehicle. The original coil springs will have to go, and probably the radiator too. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but if I do I'll be sure to edit this post. :)

Oh yeah, don't forget AMG badge for the deck lid. After all, you do want this to be authentic, right?

Go for it. You can also try an ECM from these guys and let us know how good it is:

When you can pick up an average-mile w208 CLK55 for $15-20k these days, I can't imagine how it would ever make sense to do such a swap.

I am attempting something very similar right now which is to swap the 3.2 in my 2004 Crossfire (Same as SLK320) with a 5.0 from a similar year CL500. I have managed to keep costs way down. I got a the engine from a rear totaled CL500 with less than 2500 miles on it for 1,600. which included complete engine with engne cover, wiring harness and Computer. the only thing missing was the water pump and accessories which can be swapped from the V6.

To put this engine in the Crossfire (R170 chassis and probaly the CLK) you would need CLK500, CLK55, or C43 exhaust manifolds. I am also getting rid of the stock collong fan and replacing it with dual 12 in fans.

the ECU is the biggest issue. I am having it Unlocked and then re-programed to the car with the star diagnostic system.

Why? Sell the 320 for a authentic 55 AMG. The cost of the swap isnt worth the hassle. In the end you still have the 320 interior, transmission that wont handle the extra power, and CLK's have weak diff's the 320 diff wasnt meant to handle the 390lbs ft of torque that the 55 engine delivers.

Why not just sell your crossfire for a crossfire SRT-6. Same V6 kompressor engine as in the C32 AMG, and the mods are endless.

LantanaML320 11-11-2009 11:13 PM

The SRT6/AMG32 has its limits. It has been much more rewarding figuring out how to install a V8. It is now almost done. The engine running through my Ansa exhaust sounds amazing and it didn't cost anywhere near what people thought it would. I have spent about $4,000 but I can know that down to about $3,000 if I sell my perfectly good 320 V6 engine.
