How would an E500 (W211) sound sans mufflers?
 

I just bought a loaded black on black '04 E500 that the previous owner put on fat AMG wheels, calipers, E55 seats etc. It looks quite sinister and the only thing I don't like is that it's too quiet. How would it sound without mufflers. Just with the converters and straight pipes to replace the mufflers. I'm looking for either a 60's small block sound or a late model Mustang GT/Cobra note. Would it throw any codes?

You would have a "nice" rumble from that set-up. Might get tiresome after a while.

I think that would be incredibly goofy....why first of all? and secondly the engine would run incredibly poor....there this thing called 'back pressure'
that engines are designed around. Remove the back pressure and you a have a problem Houston. Ever stood next to a Cosworth Indycar when they fire it up cold? No back pressure because engine is designed to not have any back pressure...they won't idle and are obnoxiously loud....I see no benifit to that approach on a passenger car....

If you want to make your Mercedes sound like a rusted out crappy 1976 Ford pickup truck I guess that's your call....but I don't don't see the logic here...just me though

Plus, since it's an automatic trans it won't sound very good most of the time unless you lock it into lower gears.

Racing engines (drag or otherwise) idle poorly because the aggressive cam profile is designed for high-rpm operation.
