E430 DIY Replacement W210
Does anybody have experience replacing the transmission on a '99 E430? Mine has gone and it's time for a replacement.
On the DIY scale how complex is it? So far only maintenance I've done on my E430 was spark plug replacement which I would rank a 5-6 due to the difficulty of getting the plugs out safely. Also are there any special tools needed? Things I've hear so far from other research include *I'll need the dipstick + MB Fluid. Fluid level is CRITICAL *Transmission is secured by Torx bolts My local indy shop wants approx $4,500. I've confirmed with a few other shops. Also any good sources for a quality rebuild? Thanks for the help! |
All you've done is spark plugs and you want to swap the trans.....uhh.
Have you ever done more than just changing spark plugs in general? If not...then -> Take it to shop! Swapping just a trans isn't an easy task.......I can 100% guarantee that if spark plugs are all you have DIY'd....then a trans swap attempt is not a good idea! There's a reason the shop wants $4500! |
Yeah, probably should have clarified. I've done engine work before on non-mercedes vehicles. I have done a head replacement, timing belt replacement, piston rings, and an alternator on a few ford & asian cars.
My concern with the DIY transmission is aligning the transmission properly, the actual weight of removing it without a lift, and any special tools that might be neccesary other than fairly standard torx sockets. Thanks for any direction |
