190E 2.3 8V Iginition Timing
I don't know if what I did is correct or complete.
I moved the front balancer until the T mark was right on the pin that sticks out on the block. I then moved the ignition distributor and lined it up with the notch on its housing. When I turned the car on the T was spot on where I set it as I used a strobe light to look at it while set at ZERO degrees. Was there anything else I needed to do? The car does backfire if I push on the throttle while in neutral. By the way, this a 1988. |
The distributor has NOTHING to do with ignition timing.
Timing is set by the signal from flywheel & pre-set program in the ignition module (EZL). Aligning the distributor is only to keep the ignition from cross firing at higher RPM's |
So now maybe I have a bad EZL since the car backfires and stalls a lot, what do you think?

My other question from observation is that I noticed that the mark on the front balance wheel will drift if I moved the distributor adjusting nut; how come you say they are not related? (this is all at idle of course)
