Short fill Help Please
Still can not fill the tank, only able to get 17-18 gal.
Took the vehicle to the dealer the tech inspected all the lines and tested the fuel sender all ok. The below was stated on the invoice sheet. They said no diagnostic charge because they (dealer) did not know "if" it would work (quoted a cost of $800 +) with no guarantee. TESTED OPER OF 1.00 EVAP SYS. CHECKED FOR BULL. AND TAC CASES OPEN TAC CASE 802921. Any comments ideas? I have tried to search for a TAC Case 802921 (part number, what part ?) Lee short on a fill |

TAC is an internal request for technical assistance from MB.
The most common issue on a short fill is the charcoal cannister. On a 8 year old car no real need to spend $$$ on that type of problem! The car "had" a 21 gallon tank.

![]() As far as your problem is concerned, are you sure that the tank isn't full? Maybe the gauge isn't reading correctly. I've seen problems like this many times. If you're certain that the tank isn't filling properly, I'd recommend disconnecting the vent line to the charcoal canister, and see if the tank fills completely. A plugged canister won't allow the tank to vent during fill-up, causing the pump to shut off early. I've seen this happen a few times, most recently on a 2007 S550. I wouldn't be surprised if the TAC made a similar recommendation. |

Does the fuel gauge read full when the pump shuts off? Rash of defective fuel sender units out there. Also, check your instrument cluster readout for gallons remaining in the tank vs. fuel gauge to confirm these match. Finally, fill the tank, reset the trip odometer and the computer (not the 4 hour instantaneous portion but the total since reset) and drive the car for most of the tank of fuel. Do the math to confirm that the miles traveled on the trip odometer and miles traveled and mpg on the computer match. Form a conclusion from this as to whether the tank is holding its stated capacity. Mark

short fill
yep got it at a police auction I was wondering why those huge bags of white powder were floating in my tank.
I actually on the last fill was able to get 20 + gallons. Yhis is after several weeks of short fill. M.B.Doc I believe hit it. Maybe the charcoal filter is drying out ( yea right) $325 for a new canister........I will keep trying. Lee |
