Help! CLK55 loud engine tapping sound...

Hey all,

I have a 4 month old CLK55 with a persisitently noisy engine. Brought the car in at 1200 miles b/c of the noise, dealer said he found excessive wear on BOTH camshafts and ended up replacing the entire valve train (cams, lifters & rockers). When they finished, it sounded great.

Now at 3000 miles, car has been in twice since cams were replaced to have rocker arms re-torqued. Dealer claims no abnormal wear at this point but this car contiues to get louder and louder. It doesnt do it when cold or even when it warms to operating temp through mild driving, but the minute I start driving the car like it was meant to be driven, the noise starts and continues until the engine cools off. It's so loud i can hear it through closed windows and everyone in or neer the car comments on it. Weird thing is, the car runs and idles fine.

Dealer is now after 4 visits trying to pull the "it's normal" routine. I look in his face and know that he's doesnt even believe that but doesnt have any answers. I get the feeling that this engine is too new for them to have any good answers.

Anyone here have any comments or suggestions??

Any comments on forcing MBZ to address the issue, I feel that we are at a "your word vs. mine" juncture with them.

Thanks in advance

Chris

That engine is not all that new-was first installed in E55s a few years back.

Something's screwy-call MBUSA
