My airbags expire this month......
Is there anything I need to do? Have the dealer check them and extend the expiration date?
Thx. |
Not really necessary.....they expired 4 years ago on our 300E....
All the dealer will do is offer to replace it for $1000+....not worth the trip. Evidence has shown they work fine even when really old. |
Ask them how much for an extension sticker LOL
|
The first extension sticker was free, I have not heard about a second one. MB is not making a fuss about the life of airbags my 92 would be 16 years old
|
My airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners worked as designed in my '91 350SD with 535,000 miles a few weeks ago. They had not been re-certified or replaced.

As said, tests on air bags over 20 years old have shown a very low failure rate. Manufacturers put an earlier expiration date on the devices to protect them from law suits. Also, until enough time has passed and enough tests performed, we can't really know the life expectancy of these units. I suspect that you won't see and manufacturer rushing to test and certify old air bags, either!! They don't want to open a can of legal worms. I do believe, though, Volvo has conducted tests on their old air bags for a number of years with excellent results.

I had no idea they even expired. My seat belts seem to work just find, so I'm not going to worry about it.

I thought this was a thread about the impending death of some in-laws...
