code #5 exhaust gas recirculation faulty--does this reading mean that the egr ass. needs to be replaced? OR is there some other problem that give the code #5 ??? thanks:confused:

Try a search for 104 EGR pipe - very common problem.

An easy test to isolate the system fault is to activate the EGR manually by pulling a vac on the egr with a hand pump @ idle/warm engine. The engine will attempt to stall if the EGR is working and the tube passage back to the intake is clear. If YES, then the problem is upstream of the EGR, if NO, it is downstream or EGR diaphragm.
Upstream would be the SOV valve that controls the vac to EGR, with the first suspect on that chassis for upsteam diagnosis being the white plastic vac line running under the engine upper/ front cover feeding that SOV...they crack from heat fatuque and leak and that is the most common fault for that code. Very simple to see and a simple fix is to replace that vac line with a rubber line for the full length. If NO. then the SOV or Sig to it are the next suspect..[ but rarely is that the cause]
