300te rolls after parked?
 

1989 300te- I just noticed that when I park the car...put it in Park and turn off the key, the car rolls about 1'. Never did that before. Put it in Park, turn off ignition, and car rolls (backwards) about 1 foot-ish. Problem? Should I even care?

Check your driveshaft rubber joints?

no, I personally wouldn't worry about that, as I have a 1990 300TE.
I have found the thing to do is this. It seems as though one must stop the car completely, keep your foot on the brake, put the transmission into Park and let the whole damn thing settle down, then shut the engine off. I swear, there is like stored kinetic energy in the car. These Mercedes braking systems...I'm still getting used to them.....

Use your parking brake.

It's due to something known as a parking "pawl" inside the tranny.

The parking pawl locks the transmission's output shaft to the transmission casing by engaging a pawl (a pin) that engages in a notched wheel on the shaft, stopping it (and thus the driven wheels) from turning.

My wife constantly complains because I have a tendency (from my stick shift days) to keep the brake pedal depressed even after I put the car in "Park". Then I release the brake, and of course, she's getting out of the car as it lurches backward.

I noticed that this is always been the case on the W124. I don't think it's age, as my '01 and '07 do the same thing...just not as much. I would guess it's just tolerances...

As soon as I bought my (first) Mercedes, that was one of the things I noticed right away... that the car rolls more than any other before the parking pawl engages.
