95 S320 thumping sound from engine
 

I was driving home on friday night, and the engine developed a thumping sound, like a cylinder not getting fuel. It was a miss in the engine I"m sure. so, I stopped and left the car running. The engine was vibrating and making a thumping sound. I got out of the car and went around to the tailpipe. I took a few good sniffs from the exhaust. It didn't smell sweet, and it wasn't smelling like burning oil. In fact there was no smoke at all. It didn't even smell rich of gas from the exhaust. I restarted that car, and the sound almost went away.
I dont' have any kind of scanner, or the led blinker type of tool.
I was thinking that the spark plugs and the wires and short connectors should be replaced. Possibly the coils.... I don't know when the last time they were changed was.
Does anyone have any links to where I can get a code blinker, and where I can find the port to use the blinker from?? I don't know any of this... I can do many mechanical repairs, but the electrically involved ones can be tough for me.
Any good advice would be greatly appreciated...

Your car is both OBDI and OBDII, or at least the U.S. version. Your next step should really be to read the fault codes, or get them read. It's not that hard to build the code reader, or to find someone with an OBDII reader. The 38 pin is in the engine compartment, right rear, and the OBDII port is under the steering wheel.

I changed the plugs and wires, including the short connectors right under the ignition coil. Car started a lot better than it had for a while, and no funny sounds. I'm going to build the code reader, and check the codes, and possibly clear them.
