Steering Gearbox on SL500 is leaking

I bought this SL a year ago and only now I am finding out the little problems with it. The steering gearbox is leaking oil, anyone know how difficult a job it is to remove it? How about the rebuilding or replacing the seals? There are a bunch of allen head type screws on it and I wondered if anyone has done this. How much oil does this thing hold and is it possible to run it dry? how about refilling it, is that possible without taking it off? I know these are a lot of questions, but I don't have a manual and the info I do have isn't detailed enough. Thanks, Steve

Tell us what year your car is - SL500 could mean anything from 1994 to 2006. The gearbox shares fluid with the pump and reservoir. Removing a gearbox is a fairly difficult job but certainly doable. Stop leak would probably solve the problem.

gearbox leak on 1995 SL500

This is a 1995 Sl500. I did not see any hoses going in or going out of it. I assumed this had to be some kind of a gearbox. The steering wheel shaft goes into it. I would be inclined to use a stop leak additive but is it going to be compatible with whatever MB fluid is in this reservoir for the power steering pump? This fluid is clear looking. Thanks and any thoughts, suggestions on this are welcome. Steve

It has two lines going to - high pressure and low pressure. Lucas PS stop leak works very well and I'm sure there are others. Read the bottle for compatibility but I don't think you can go wrong.
