Can someone please recommend one or two different brands of coolants?
 

I am going coolant shopping, can someone please recommend what to use in a really loved car? Thank you in advance.

I'm assuming this is for your MB...
 

1. Original MB Coolant (aka the orange stuff)

is this the brand? Is it called Original MB Coolant? Where do I get it, at the dealership?

Just go to your MB dealer and ask for MB coolant. It should come in a bottle with the MB logo, part number (Q 1003 0002) and other nomenclature on it.

Just run down to Walmart and get the Havoline 5 yr./100,000 mile stuff. It is orange and silicate free. The silicate free is the trick for longevity of antifreeze and compatibility for your vehicle. And for the record, M/B does not manufacture antifreeze. It is bottled for them. Buy which ever pretty bottle you like.:)

No, only use Mercedes-Benz coolant. If you do a search, you'll see why!! Do the search, and you'll come up with a wealth of info.
It's only about $11.00 and you get it at the dealer!

MB coolant all the way...forget the rest.

I think dealers set their own prices.

My local dealer sells them for $13 per gallon.

I must stress only MB coolant, get it at the dealer.

Mine was around $13 a quart and in the scope of the cost of ownership the cost does not make that big of a difference.

It is orange and is the ONLY COOLANT APPROVED FOR YOUR VEHICLE

I read the article on Antifreeze in the Mercedes publication 'Star'. I use the havoline.

I have been around this block a few times. On an airplane powerplant by lycoming (the 360), an alternator belt used on that motor is the same $41 john deere belt. The only difference in the two is that lycoming takes the john deere belt, blesses it with various incantations, stamps a different number on it (FAA) and sells it for 3 times what you can get it down at the tractor place.

If the non-Mercedes coolant used has a different pH than the Mercedes coolant, havoc (chemically-induced erosion) is wreaked upon the plastic components in the radiator, leading to premature failure.

$30,000 to rebuild a 4 cylinder air-cooled IO-360 pushrod is ridiculous.

How cheap everything would be if it were cheaper to get FAA certification on parts. Enter the world of experimentals...
