Where is Coolant Temp Sensor on 1995 E320??

I purchased this coolant temp sensor:
http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=&yearid=1995%40%401995&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES%2DBENZ%40%4063%40%40MERCEDES%2DBE NZ%40%40X&modelid=6392%3ABT%7C5%3AMBC%7C1508%3AED%7C10000022%40%40E320+Sedan&keyword=sensor&subcatid =P:240675@@Water+Temp%2E+Sensor&mode=PA

It is supposed to be on the thermostat housing. But the only sensors there are a one-prong sensor for the dash gauge, a four-prong/blade sensor for something else. (Don't know purpose.)

Where is this sensor? Or do I have the anomaly car that does not have one?

You purchased the incorrect sensor.
The correct one for a 1995 engine has 4 spade connectors.

Great -- thanks.

The four-spade is what I saw. Will swap it for the correct one.

OK Wait --

Called my local dealer and they said the thermostat housing has the one-prong sender for the dash gauge, and the four-spade is for for the aux fans.

I saw a diagram with another one sticking out sideways (I believe for a 1994 car), but I don't have that on my thermostat housing -- just a flat bolt sealing what could be a potential opening. So which one connects to the fuel injection/ECU system?

I see this is going to be my weekend challenge!

I've been calling around and nobody knows where this sensor is hiding. :D

You have a 95 version..that sensor combined the two sensors into one...so you need the 4 pin sensor...simple.

Ahhh.... Thanks.

So the squarish, 4-blade/spade sensor sitting in plain view on top of the thermo housing is it? (I was assuming there were two wires for one fan and two for the other, but now I recall that they both turn on/off together, never separately (or so I have noticed).

tHE SENSOR IS two THERMISTORS IN one CASING..THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER ELECTRICALLY...THEY SIMPLE SHARE THE SAME CASE SO THEY SENSE THE SAME TEMP LOCATION. iF YOU OHM THEM DIAGONALLY ACROSS , THEY SHOULD READ THE SAME OHMS, BUT THEY ARE NEVER IN THE SAME CIRCUIT B/C THEY CONTROL COMPLETETLY DIFFERENT CIRCUITS , JUST LIKE THE '94 VERSION DID WITH two INDIVIDUAL SENSORS ..

CAPS LOCK MISTAKE AND I AM NOT CORRECTING IT....

Great. Just returned the wrong one to the parts place.

Thanks again.

By the way, what is this sensor called? I tried searching in AllParts and found nothing.

EricSilver 04-10-2009 10:17 PM

Never mind -- I found it by searching the 1996 E320.

This part shows up in searches by 'engine coolant temperature sender' rather than sensor. The correct part # for the four spade connector sender on the water pump is 011-542-51-17.
