replacing rotors in 400E
I am replacing the front pads and rotors in my '92 400E (80k) this weekend. Are the rotors easy to remove/replace or do you have to mess with the front wheel bearings to remove the rotors? How do I know whether the front wheel bearings should be replaced/repacked/resealed? Further, is there anything I should be aware of when replacing the front rotors. Thanks in advance.

If there like my SEC it`s a bit involved. You`ll have to clean the grease out of the hub and repack the bearings. Also you`ll need a 10mm metric hex socket to remove the allen bolts that hold the rotor to the hub.
The best way to do this is to reattach the wheel to the hub and turn it over, stradel the tire and remove the bolts. You`ll need a torque wrench to to tighten the allen bolts,on my car it`s 110nm. And you must use blue Loctite on the bolts. New seals for the wheel bearings. Thats how it`s done on a SEC. If your car has fixed rotors it probably will be the same, but you should get the torque specks and bearing preload for your car. OH, use MB high temperature GREEN GREASE on the bearings and hub. CLEAN OUT THE OLD GREASE completely and don`t mix them. John Last edited by 1991 560 SEC; 10-19-2001 at 06:23 AM. |

400e rotors
If I'm not mistaken on my old 92 400E that they were of the Hat design and removed separately from the spindle which made them easy. I think there is a threaded hole which lets you put in a bolt to help remove if rusted stuck.

400Eman:
How did it go? Did you run into any snags? I need to change all 4 rotors on the 300E next time the brakes are due, so I'm interested in hearing about your experience. Thanks.

Rotor replace is way easy on W124's. You will need an allen wrench (best on a socket handle). Might have to tap them a bit to get them off the hub, but the hub itself doesn't necessarily have to come off. (Though on one, I had to remove the hub and drop the hub/rotor assembly on the floor to dislodge it.)

I would suggest going through the front wheel bearings while doing this job. 80k may be a little early but then again, it should be good to go for another 80k.
