1989 300SE Speedometer

My 1989 speedometer stopped working last week. When I bought the car a year ago it was not working either, but started during a long trip one hot summer day last year. Any help diagnosing would be appreciated. Is this cable driven or purely electronic?

Thanks

MB Neo

It's electric driven by a sensor on the nose of the differential. You'll need a wiring diagram.

Warren,

Thanks for your advise. Do you know if there is a wiring diagram available on this website?

The sensor for the speedometer is located at the very rear of the transmission on the left side. Chances are your speedo head is either shorted or the gears have broken.

If it's shorted, what can I do to repair? How do I remove the cluster to check the gears?

Insert the cluster hooks on either side of the cluster and pull.

If I can get mey hands on the wiring diagram it wouldn't hurt.

As far as the cluster hooks, I think I read I can use a coat hanger as long as I modify the ends. At what location on the cluster is best to insert the hooks? Will this effect the other instruments in the cluster? They all work fine.

Do a search here. There are plenty of diagrams of these hooks and how to make and use them.
