I own a '92 300CE and have leather problem with the current wheel. I could get it recovered, however, have an opportunity to get a '95 wood and leather S class steering wheel for cheap.

Does anyone know if the airbag and steering are compatible and could be switched out?

I guess I will keep the original and get it recovered as I am unsure about the fit and airbag relationship.

Norm, suggest you call the Parts Department at your local MB dealer and ask them if the steering wheels are interchangeable.

Did that and they could not tell me unless they had VIN numbers from both of the cars. The steering wheel I wanted to buy is already taken off of the '95 car. As near as I can tell the shape of the 4-spoke is different and the airbag area shape is different. The new wheel would come with an airbag but I don't know if it would employ on any kind of accident. Do need an airbag case of an accident.

I think the early cars used a slip ring to make contact, and the later ones used a clock spring affair, maybe the parts guy can help.

what I would do is check out this thing called Wheelskins. I put one on my 88 BMW wheel for the same reason(s). It works great after 3 years and I have always liked it (the feel) better than the original anyway. They are like $50 and take like an hour to install but are premier.... I got mine from Bavarian Auto but a steering wheel is a steering wheel....

Yeah, thought of the wheelskin thing but I have yet to find one that really looks good. The ads that these companies run for them are c#%^. I haven't seen one yet that really makes me want to go out and buy one and if I want to maintain a somewhat original look it worries me that the wheelskin will make it look cheesy!:eek:

I think you are correct Peter.

A few people converted later and different model steering wheels but had to modify and swap internal parts.

Why not compare mounts between the two and determine how much difference or modifications are needed?

What is the part number?

If you get a hold of MB, I believe the replacement 124 wood leather wheel may be the one for the 140 S Class. They do not bolt straight on to the 124. The slip rings are different and need to be "spiral" for the late model 124. You will also need a bigger hole in the boss for the wiring and a rubber grommet for the wires.

I have a brand new “Genuine” wood leather wheel from the MB dealer for my 124 Cabriolet except it does not fit! Fits a 140 S class though.

If you let me know the part number I can compare it to the one I have, that way I can let you know what to expect if it is the same.
