W210 E55 engine stumble/miss at decel to stop
Car: 2001 W210 E55 with stock unmodified v8, 101k miles
So far: Replaced plugs, wires, O2 sensors, engine mounts, throttle actuator, and MAF. All other services performed according to schedule since new. Symptoms: Intermittent engine stumble or miss immediately after coming to a complete stop. Usually this occurs after the first full complete stop after being started (i.e., not after pulling out of a parking spot, but after reaching 40mph or so and having to fully stop for a red light). Engine will not stumble or miss in neutral or park if left alone to idle. Only occurs when coming to a stop and vehicle begins lurching/shaking/surging as if not running on all cylinders. The troubling part is that NO CODES are being thrown during or after these episodes! Engine power in all RPMs very good otherwise and good throttle response overall. Any ideas?? thanks! |
I know NOTHING about this car, but it sounds like an idle air issue.

Have you or repair shop done a VSS (engine crank sensor) adaptation?
IF not?? that would be MY starting point. |

Just got back from meeting w/service. Car had the stumble on the way there but would not re-exhibit the behavior with the service manager and tech in the car. Apparently all adaptations have been redone multiple times.
In speaking with the svc manager the possibility came up that maybe the torque converter was not unlocking when coming to a stop, thus dragging the engine town to a too-low idle? I had another car where I could lock the converter with a switch, and I remember if I left it locked when coming to a stop the same thing would happen as what's going on now. Is this plausible or anyone else see a similar issue? |
X55, what did you find out on this problem? My E sometimes has this problem after a second start. For instance you stop to get gas and after starting the car and putting it in Drive it has a faint lurching. After driving it seems the problem is gone. Only seems to happen after a warm start. I have replaced plugs and and wires with new OEM. Also not getting any codes. My W202 had the same lurching feeling when the EGR line had come loose.
