210 Window problem,moves 3 inches at a time

I just bought a 1998 E300TD and the previous owner just had a drivers window motor replaced. The problem is that the window only goes up or down by by 3 inches and stops. If i keep hitting the switch it makes it all the way.Takes about 5 taps on switch to go the entire way.If i hold the switch it still stops.
The person that put it in gave some bs about using a cheaper priced motor.
So does it need to be clocked or maybe a relay. The other three windows work perfect
Help

Once fully closed, continue holding the switch in the closed position to reset the range of travel.

I think you are supposed to hold the switch in the "half-way" position, once closed, for 2 sec. That should "re-set" it. Although mine does the same thing some times. I think there was a TSB on it having to do with the friction of the window. It is a safety thing where it thinks something is stuck in the window. I just live with it. Mercedes electronics.

my 1990 300TE has just started to do that, the drivers side window is acting funky. Won't go up mostly, only at times...I think it's the switch on the console...sometimes it's fine. If it conks out completely I'll just switch the passenger window switch over, that'll probably solve it. And then go find another switch at a junk yard, and I don't even know if the rear window switches will work for the front doors, with the auto lowering and such...anyway...I would work that one by swapping parts first...good luck

That is a completely different system. These are CAN bus based and have motor current sensors to detect end of travel, as well as obstructions.

Thanks for the replys.Tried to reset window with the button, but does not change.Even found the info in the owners manual.Says to hold button, not how much.Putting downward pressure on window while raising it does not change anything, still stops every few inches.
This is almost like a problem i had years ago on american cars where the wipers would stop when they reached the park position because there was a dead wire at that spot.Pulling on the wipers would restart them on a full cycle only to stop again at the start of the new cycle.Window motor seems to run a full circle and then stop before its next cycle.
Maybe disconnect battery and reset all the windows ,seats ,ect...Kind of scared to end up with a worse problem.
Thanks
Rich

Just to close off this thread, fist Thank Everyone for the help.:):):)
My feeling is that the window motor is defective, like an open in the electric motor.Motor was just replaced a month or so before i bought the car.I tried a wiggle test on the wires when the door is fully open, but no change.
When i fix the a/c window will not be that much of an issue,as it does open.
THANKS VERY MUCH
WHAT A GREAT SITE

RE: 210 Window problem,moves 3 inches at a time

Thanks Terry Allison for "the hold for two second in close position" suggestion. I had the same problem with windows hesitating. What happens is that the windows work in the non-auto mode with partial pressure on the switch. Once the finger pressure triggers the autoup/autodown, it quits and hence the hesitation.

Just want to add that I finished installation of a rear window regulator on a 2000 W210 E320 4matic. It was much easier than the W124.

then try this, take the switch for the rear window out and swap it with the front window switch and see what happens...see what I'm saying...or even, take the passenger side switch and swap with the drivers side. If the window works at all it's not the motor, it's the switch...

you guys are fooling around here right? It's the switch on the console, if the motor runs at all it's not the motor nor the lift or anything, the switch is shot...come on.....

It's a reset problem

Wanted to respond to this old thread. I found it searching for the exact problem. I followed the reset advice, and it works!

Lower window fully, raise fully, and hold switch to maximum "up" for a few seconds. The auto raise and lower now functions properly. I recently replaced the battery so maybe this leads to the necessary reset? All my windows were doing this. I reset them all and works like a charm!
