air in fuel system ?

hi all (great site
ok here goes...1992 300ce 24v Sportline. car is well maintained and serviced regularly. 178k on the clock. only use 98 octane BP and a bottle of nulon fuel cleaner every 4 or so tanks. if car is driven every day there is absolutely no problem, idles perfect 750-800rpm accelerates fine all is good.....BUT leave the car for more than 24 hours will start to idle oddly and when put in reverse to pull out it will stall. then i will let it idle for a few minutes and it will stall again as if starved of fuel.restart, rev a few times and this routine will go on for around 15-30 minutes. and for a little longer if i push down too fast on accelerator it will shudder and may stall again(most alarmingly at intersections!!). again if its driven every day its perfect. if not i get this drama. guy at work (old merc mechanic) reckons its a small plastic valve in the fuel pump in the boot that wears out eventually. any other ideas? and again this only occurs if its undriven for more than a day.
thanks
