W201, possible to retrofit a newer sunroof into an older model?

Search really didn't show anything, unless I used the wrong keywords.

What I would like to know is if it is practically possible, assuming I can get all the parts needed out of a pick-a-part junkyard from a newer W201 with the flip-up sunroof..to retrofit it into an earlier model W201 that has the sliding sunroof only?

The parts are fairly inexpensive, but is it too labor intensive to make the cost/benefit ratio unrealistic? I'm thinking it is not a DIY type of job either.

I really like the flip-up feature on my 300CE and miss it on my 190D.

Thanks

I doubt it unless you put a LOT of work into it.

Probably a different motor (different limit switch design), possibly a different cable (more travel for 2-way operation), different roof mechanism, different overhead console with switch (requiring moving your sunroof wiring to the roof). Beyond that, I don't know.

It is widely accepted however that the early tip-up roof on the 201 was problematic where the slide-only was fairly trouble-free.

Thanks guys. I'll stick with the slide open roof only. However, I sure would like to know how to get that little black wind deflector to stay "up". On my coupe, ('89 300CE), after I open the sunroof, I reach up and give the deflector a little push to pop it up. It stays up until I close the roof.

But, on my 190D, no amount of pushing causes the deflector to stay up. It drops back down right away. Is this a simple spring replacement? Or something more drastic?

Take a look at this link: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123SunRoofSprings. Did this on my W201, and it worked great. I found that the springs were OK but the (2) plastic slide supports were broken.

That's marvelous, Bill. Thanks for the link. Didn't know these existed. I'll see if I can get the parts tomorrow.

Thanks for the offer, but not needed. Stopped at my mechanic yesterday for an unrelated issue and he went ahead and installed new springs on the sunroof. Works great now! Didn't realize it, but there is a height adjustment for the deflector. What'll those Germans think of next?
