changing o2 sensor
I need help! I am trying to replace the o2 sensor on my 1982 280e. I can't get the old one out. I am using a special o2 socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar but I can't budge the thing. I think it is the original sensor--not replaced in more than 15 years. I have already soaked it in liquid wrench and have also tried heating the part of the exhaust, but no luck. I am afraid I will strip the outside of it if I use much more force. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Also, will I cause any damage if I just leave it there (already cut the wires), and run the car in open loop?

Your car never came with an O2 sensor. Most of the added systems died years ago. If the system isn't working the old sensor is doing a fine job: of plugging the hole.
Before I would worry about the sensor, I would verify the system and whether it still has control. |

thanks for the advice. I spent about five hours and broke a socket adaptor trying to get that thing out of there. I also bought a replacement sensor for about $20 that I will keep as a souvenir.
