Replacing Front Pads on 92 300E

Currently I have been removing the entire caliper assembly (2 bolts) from its base when replacing the pads. Instead, should I just remove the bottom caliper bolt and swing the caliper upwards to remove/replace the pads. Then again maybe MB didn't design it to be done that way. I may have been making more work than required. :o:o
