Do you need an advanced scan tool for brake work on '04 E500?

I'm looking in the WIS about changing the pads and rotors on my '04 E500 and I read the car has a high pressure SBC brake system and something about a scanner being required to release the pressure before I can change the pads. Any insight into this? So I can't just squeeze the pads to retract the pistons and remove the caliper?

IIRC you can remove key from ign and close the doors w/o reopening, and the system will go to sleep after 20 minutes.

Do verify independently before proceeding.

*edit* SBC plug must be disconnected first, THEN follow above procedure.

I would do what the manual says and not take any chances. And yes you need a advanced scan tool to do it

you can make sure that you will be safe by unplugging the abs module.large plug comes off very easily.

Can I flush the brakes like normal as well?

Bleeding no; you need to read up on DIY's on other sites before attempting that job; otherwise you will set a code that can only be erased by a high end scanner.
