Moving house...finally settled in.

Got back on track with windows. Pulled the ONLY WORKING window front passenger side and applied same technique. Window moved.

Okay so my technique was fine!! I looked on fastlane and a new motor is $93....I hardly want to spend $300 alone on motors..thats half what I paid for the car. I plan to go to the junkyard with tools + battery and keep popping off doors until I find one that works.

So: How can I tell if my problem lies with motor or regulator?? The motor HAS POWER, but just clicks and the window does not move. So how can I tell? Sorry I have zero knowledge of windows at all. Learning curve so bare with me!

When I applied power it would click just a little, but the motor would not turn.

A new motor fixed it right up!

This sounds like my problem. Anybody else confirm? I'd hate to pull 3 motors at JY only to find its the regulators.

I've read this thread- make sure it is your motors. Wiring is a COMMON problem on these cars-wires break inside the boot between door and body. That was the intemidant behavior of my rear door for years-.

Regardless of wiring, if I put a battery on the motor wires and it doesn't move, then something is going on with the motor or regulator.

Got a working window motor from junkyard today.

Hooked it up and they work fine when connected to my starter battery......but when I connect the car's battery the fuse blows every time.

Any ideas why this could be happening?

You got a short in the system?

cliffmac 08-09-2009 09:30 PM

if the motor was shot it would blow a fuse as it would draw too much amperage...that's why there are fuses...

cliffmac 08-09-2009 09:36 PM

it's gotta be a switch or switches...what else could it be? If you can make the window motor run fine hot wired from the battery and then it doesn't installed and actuated via the switch what else could it be?

Stop. Don't buy anything (yet). If you disassemble the motor (like two screws on the top), pull the worm gear out and grease it, I'll bet you dollars to donuts your problem will be solved.

ps2cho 08-15-2009 09:24 PM

Okay.

I disconnected the motor completely and left the other wires on. The fuse still blows, so its something in the wiring through the door.

So I investigated further and found this:

http://www.ps2cho.net/downloads/phot...s/badwire2.jpg

All I did was peel off the heatshrink and separate the two wires -- that wiring as shown was exactly how it was. Completely exposed.

Unfortunately after fixing that...fuse is still blowing
Just wanted to post that picture so people know that this wiring will degrade pretty badly over time.

So... there must be a short in the wire deeper into the door. How much of a PIA is this going to be now? Anybody gone this far before?

Hirnbeiss 08-16-2009 07:56 AM

I guess I owe you a donut, but who'da thunk?

ps2cho 08-16-2009 12:42 PM

Well its not fixed yet...It's still shorting somewhere.

So frustrating. Nothing is ever easy in the auto repair world, huh :)

Could it have been a rodent gnawing on it?

Will soon find out...Tearing the car to pieces right now following the connection. So far seats removed, carpet gone....Cable goes through door grommet, down under a black plastic cover towards the drivers seat, then heads towards center console...
So center console is in mid removal.

What a pain just for a damn window

Will update in a bit with any success.

I hope to find something dramatic to make this worthwhile....like an evolved Mercedes Benz cable chewing rat.
