One Touch Window Conversion

I'd like to convert the front windows in my 88 300CE so that they open all the way with a single touch, like the later models do. Is this a simple matter of changing to an appropriate switch or is there more to it?

Thanks,
Mark

There's more to it - that one-touch feature is computer controlled. The computer tells the motor to stop when the glass reaches the bottom; otherwise, the motor would always be energized. I don't think there's a quick mod for this, maybe I'm wrong...

I remember reading that there was a way to modify the rocker switch which disabled the the return spring. The downside was that you had to manually stop the motor by manually returning the switch to the center position . . . far from optimum.

There are kits that convert existing power windows to "one touch" up & down. They also have a safety feature which stops the motor if there's an obstruction, such as fingers. Typically, the units only convert a pair of windows, so if you want to do four windows, you'll need to buy a pair.

Spill cola in the switch, it will stick for you.

Seriously, the later cars have a different "convenience module" electronics for the windows.

I love the one-touch windows.....I need to replace my switches though, as they both only work on the one-touch command....they are intermittent on the manual mode. Probably dirty or worn out. Perhaps I will try disassembling and cleaning them. :D

The later cars have a completely different wiring harness, additional control electronics, and of course the different switches in the console. I'm not sure if the window motors and mechanisms are the same or different. Frankly, if you really want this feature it would easier and cheaper to sell your car and buyer a later model year.

Actually, I found a relay from a company called AutoLoc which does one-touch up and down. You need one for each switch you want to convert. Depending on where you buy them, they run $20-30 apiece. Looks like an easy installation.

We installed two of the kits on a 201 and they have worked work fine for the last four years but it is a little fiddly figuring out the wiring as the merc switches (if I remember correctly) have five wires and control the window motors through ground. The kits are available on eBay:

Bobf -

Do you have any recommendations/guidance for the installation?

Thanks.

Unfortunately do not remember any wiring details of the installation. It was a lot of trial and error.

The box comes with instructions, the main task is identifying which wires on the merc switch do what. You have to cut the wires and solder the appropriate box wires to the cut wires.

It might be best to take the job to an old fashioned auto/truck electric shop probably located in a dangerous part of town, that rebuilds alternators & starters. You are probably in luck if its run by a grubby old fart or someone whose first language is not English. They tend to know how to make things work.
