Replace spark plug wires / remove ignition coil cap - 300E 89

Hi,

I noticed that one of the sparkplug wires outer shell seems to be a little burned (distributor side). It is the one that goes from the distributor (center) to the ignition coil? front driver side.

I have purchased a new set of Bosch spark plug wires to replace all.

The question I have is how to unplug the wire at the ignition coil? it has a plastic cover - I have not had a chance to look closely. Just posting this in case it proves to be tricky.

Thank you

Note: The sparkplugs I am currently using are: H9DC0 and the sparkplug wires I just purchased are: Bosch 09146

That cover has a plastic tab on each side & they are easy to release.

As MBDOC said, it's very easy to get to.

I wouldn't be surprised to find the center tower on the cap fried, as well as the rotor. Bad wires have a way of damaging the cap/rotor.

Personally, I would replace wires, cap, rotor, and plugs all at the same time so you don't wind up damaging new wires with a fried distro cap.

Use your best judgment, and be sure to at least inspect the cap and rotor.

Thank you for the replies, I will check although right now I dont have the $$ for the cap / rotor, I am actually dealing with a smog issue and the wire issue was just discovered by a friend of mine, during a visual inspection. Then again if the cap has issues I guess it will be one other thing to replace

A new Bosch distributor cap and rotor are available online for $70 total. It would be best to replace them so you have a refurbished ignition system. Running your engine with deteriorated/worn cap & rotor may cause quick fouling of the new spark plugs. In the future check the condition of the cap and rotor before considering replacing ignition wires ... which last for a long, long time.

Thumbs up

I agree with Tiny Panzer, if in there just replace it all. Unless of course you recently did the rest and/or have records.
