Check out your MB VIN Number at this site
The site address below allows you to check out your VIN number.
Not sure if it will work for US MB Models but certainly works for all EURO MB's You might find it useful for look at the heritage of the car you own or are thinking of buying. Mike Stone http://www.autobaza.pl/autobaza/page.cgi?lang=1 http://uk-commerce.com/temp/mb_banner1.jpg |
I tried it with my 300E serial number. It was fine but didn't show much information, except to confirm that it is a USA car. It showed Germany and Alabama as manufacture points.

Thanks for the link. I checked both my Benz and my VW, just for s*&%s and giggles. There was no surprise on my Benz on the numbers, but for my VW it says that it was made in Emden, Germany (trucks). I guess they are saying my car was built at a truck plant.

what?
what is the purpose of this? I entered my information, and it told me there were errors on certain digits. It did say the car was a mercedes europa, whatever that is. I entered the vin for my bmw, and received a similar reply.

Just what part of my 91 300SE was assembled in Alabama?

My guess is that Alabama is (or was) the port of entry for MB's. into the US (??)

The check digit is the 10th or 11th digit in a US VIN. It's derived from the other digits based on some formula presumably so you can't just make up a VIN.
So I guess the decision to make an M103 haul a W126 was made in Alabama. I'm pretty sure the port of entry is NJ. My guess is that it lists Alabama along with Germany as a generic thing for US spec MBs these days. I wish I had my SD VIN on me. It was a Euro delivery car. Imagine if it went to Alabama to be finished then back to Germany for delivery. Sixto 91 300SE 81 300SD |
Finally checked my 81 SD. Says there's a 'mistake on position' with model (CB20) and restraint system (A).

Alabama *is* the point of entry here
Hi folks,
A friend & neighbor of mine is a new car hauler, he sometimes stops home with 8-10 new Benz's on board. He told me they all come in through Alabama. ~George~ |
It seems rather odd that a ship would travel all the way around Florida and up to Alabama when they cold just hit the East coast. I am a memeber of the MBCA and recently there was an outing at the Mercedes delivery processing center in Maryland. I have always thought that most imports from Europe came through Baltimore, MD. Though my VW Passat had aport of entry of Boston, MA.

A lot of BMW's enter through the Port of Brunswick, GA. There is a large BMW prep facility there (about 60mi north of Jacksonville, FL).
