PPI Advice

I'm going to look at a 1990 560SEL this evening and need some advice on what to look out for. Main experience with Mercedes is my current '82 300D driver, and don't know the 560SEL model.

The major issues I've had w/ my 300D are trans and AC. I also know to look out for timing chain guide.

The 560SEL is described below. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Thanks,
Mike

Car is from Oklahoma and has no rust.
Currently on it's third owner.
Has all records from time of purchase to present.
151,000 miles.
Drivers seat a bit worn.
Exterior has a few parking lot dings, but no major issues.
Mechanically sound, with new motor and transmission mounts.

This is a write-up for buying an SEC. Much of it is applicable to the SEL as well.

Mike, if this 1990 560SEL passes your inspection and you're seriously considering purchasing it arrange with the owner for a PPI by a MB-trained tech at your expense. That way you'll have a professional evaluation and learn about any pending expensive maintenance items. You need to get a car on a lift to properly inspect the suspension, drive train, exhaust system, etc.

X2. I had a 1990 420 SEL that cost me a chunk a change in repairs because I didn't do a PPI...

Thanks for the replies. All good advice. I called a local MB dealer and they would do a PPI for $208. Good insurance at a reasonalbe price. The car, however, is crap.

I don't understand these decieving sellers. Do they think we are stupid and would not notice that they are misrepresenting (lying about) the condition of the cars once we show up to look at them? Frustrating to say the least.

Before you go to see a prospective purchase, mention to the seller that you are going to arrange for a PPI by a Mercedes stealership and listen to what they say - or how they say it. Just listening to the reply can often save you a lot of time.
