Gauges not working on a 190E-1991 2.6

The fuel, oil and water temperature gauges do not work when I press the brake pedal and put the car in reverse . Once I turn the ignition back on, the gauges work until the brake pedal is applied. Any pressure on the brake pedal will cause the fuel gauge to move to about a half tank reading. Any suggestions will help.

strange...

have you tried replacing the instrument panel?

i know they are fairly cheap ($50 or so) and relatively easy to diy.

a similar thing has happened to my older brother. he drives a 2004 tundra and whenever he would put the truck in gear the fuel guage would drop to empty and then when he put it in park it would shoot back up to normal.

so im not entirely sure what the exact problem could be.

maybe a relay or something?

Sorry but I have to laugh.. I thought only this kind of stupid stuff only happens to me.. Kind of like flushing the toilet and the porch light comes on.

This sounds like a voltage problem though. Might check that your break lights are working and not drawing too much voltage from shorting out. Good luck though and I feel for you...

Sounds like a low system voltage problem,or a poor ground, or a loose conection. Start with cleaning the battery terminals and go from there., how well does the car crank, does it seem like it has a low battery??

IP is OK, it's your ground.

Remove IP, and look at firewall, upper left through the hole in the dash.

You should see a bunch of brown ground wires. Clean those connections and see if it helps.
