Well, I bit! '88 560SEL for $500!!

I went to see the '88 560SEL today, and of course for $500 I expected to see a ton of problems. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the car was in remarkably good shape. The original black paint was in terrific shape, and the only problems I could find with the body is a small dent in the rear driver's side door. The interior needed nothing more than a detailing, all the leather (black) was intact and not even too hardened. The Burlwood trim is in excellent shape, in fact I couldn't really find much wrong with the interior at all.

There's no rust anywhere on the car, it's clearly never been in an accident, and the motor started up fairly easily. It won't hold an idle and it stalls unless you hold the gas, but it revs up and sounds strong and powerful. Kinda reminds me of my old '96 Impala SS.:D

To my extreme surprise, I appear to be only the third owner and the guy I bought it from appears to have only put a few thousand miles on it. The motor is kinda dirty, the valve cover seals are shot (he included new ones and new motor mounts).

Anyway, I stole the thing for $500!! Now I have two W126 cars, a 300SE and a 560SEL.

I will post pictures as soon as I get the thing towed to my house. Oh yeah, 186K on the clock.

$500!! Heeeheeeheeheeeheee

At that mileage make sure to do the chain guides.

Sounds wonderful, congrats!!!

I just got to Los Angeles this afternoon, and I must tell you where these cars shine are the really long distance drives.

Their seats are designed by othropedic back surgeons, and they are so comfortable, secure and safe.

They have been described as "ground-bound Lear jets, and that's an apt description.

They just reel in the macadam in long huge gulps. A total pleasure to drive, hour upon hour.

Yeah, cant wait to see it. Get that engine serviced and you will be good to go.

I agree with gmercoleza on the timing chain/guides/rails, unless you know when they were last done, do that too, but you may already know that. :)
