Thumps and bumps from rear suspension?
W140 S500 1999...I had my rear accumulators replaced due to a thumping noise each time I hit a bump in the road. I was told this would take care of it. It did not it still feels like a wagon when I am on a unsmooth road. When I hit a raised area it thumps but I can not find why. It all comes from the rear both sides. The auto was the smoothist riding ever before this developed. I have 225K miles presently. I have check the hydralic levels and they are good. The thump actually sound as if it vibrates the frame, Do you have any idea what it could be, When the Benz mechanic inspected the auto he said it was the front shocks and the rear spheres so I replace both. He also said some thing about a kit that had to be pressed into its place in the front I believe maybe the control arm bushing kit and this was also done. The front seems to be quiet but the rear still thumps. Thank you for your time. MBD

The noise is probably the strut caps. They can be replaced, but it's a pain. Heat gun and all that. They come on new struts. But you also mentioned a continued stiff ride. Along those lines, maybe the new spheres are faulty, mis-attached to the hydraulics, hydr's not bled/purged, out of fluid, pump acting up, dirty fluid etc. Or the struts themselves are bad. A typical strut failure is evident by leaking and a collapsed suspension
Good luck! |
