Anybody repaired Odometers? Found problem
So I was comparing my two Odo's that I have (the one from my 260E) and one I nabbed from the junkyard.
Problem is that my one does not spin. I saw that the total mileage counter seems to move left+right slightly instead of being a solid unit. Here's where I am talking about. I can physically move the green cog back and forward. Left to right while facing the unit. http://www.ps2cho.net/downloads/phot...r/odofix_1.jpg Anybody know what could be causing the main shaft to be moving back and forth? I mean I can always roll back the other one I have to match as it works fine...but I'd kinda like to figure this one out. Any ideas? Thanks, Robert |
I have had the equivalent of that green gear crack. It would then usually not turn the shaft, but sometimes would.
I was not able to find one, so I cast a new one out of polyester resin, using the (modified) old, cracked gear as a model to make a mold. It worked until the car got wrecked, which was about 30K miles. |
Its not the gear I don't think....Its the shaft that goes through the gear.

'You be saying the shaft (On the Green gear) is inset?

I used super glue on the shaft and gear on my 87. What's happening is that the gear is spinning on the shaft. It's some kind of compression fitting design which fails over time. One has to be careful to have the numbers lined up correctly before putting the glue on. You get one chance.

Is there a retainer washer/clip missing from the ends of the rod?
|
On the 87 there is no clip or washer.
