W124 Transmission 722.358 versus .359

Hi all,

I just got a new (to me) 1992 300TE W124 with a tranmission that is going out. It is currently a 722.358. There's a local guy with a 722.359 from a sportline (1st gear start). What are my chances of interchangeability? :)

Thanks all!

Regards,
Joel

Updated Question

All,

I guess the better question for you all is:

Was there a 722.359 with first gear start? I modified my search and found a table where the 722.359 was listed as a second gear start.

Or in other word, did all W124 sportline models with auto have first gear start? Was that standard for that trim (pre-24V)?

Thanks all!

Joel

Direct swap. Only thing I would check is the size of the yokes (not that it matters). If different between that sportline one and yours, all that's required is swapping out the tail ends of the transmission and you're good to go. Nothing crazy is going to happen.

I have a 722.317 diesel transmission in my 92 sportline coupe (722.359) temporarily until I get my 5 speed stick sorted and i have absolutely no problems to speak of after nearly 1300 miles of driving.

Swapping a 722.359 with a 722.358

I've a 1992 300Ce with a 722.359 I read what you said about a direct swap however there are several fittings that are different (see photo)

where the red circle is on my 359 trans there is an electrical connection.

where the orange circle is on my 359 there is nothing. (the 358 has an electrical connector).

Just concerned about putting it in and having it not function.
