M104 Wiring harness

I'm looking at a 1995 E320 and the owner doesn't know if the wiring harness has been replaced. Is there a way to tell if it has been replaced?

Thanks.

You can pull back the insulation and see if the wiring is degraded.

you can check the part number to see if it has been upgraded.

But I would assume, if he doesn't know it hasn't been done.

Depends on how long he's owned the car. Many of these were replaced before the car reached 10 years of age. The newest 124 cars are now hitting 15 years. Lots of opportunity for prior owners to have taken care of it.

To the OP. Look for a part number tag on the harness. As I recall, it's near the battery; might have to remove the plastic shield behind the battery/in front of the electronic boxes. I wouldn't cut into somebody else's harness. If the car runs OK now, but doesn't later; you're gonna get blamed. If you can't determine whether the work has been done, use it as a negotiating point to push down the price. There's a reason why full books & records cars sell for more $$$.

Next to and below the battery, toward the center of the car, you should be able to see the wire harness. There should be a white laser-printed tag there, which has an FD (=fabrication date) tag there, dated in a wwyy format. It should be at least xx98 but most are in the current millenium.
