Is this deal legit? $1000 for a w126

I just got off the phone with the guy. He's a mechanic with a house payment coming due. Seems to know cars.

The pasts alone are worth it, if you have the place

Your link didn't work for me, but I picked up a non-running (needed an in-tank fuel strainer and some TLC after sitting 2 years garaged) grey market '85 380SEL for just under $300. Had it running in under a week (working on it after work), then changed out the chain & guides. I've been driving it for about 2 weeks now...

Don't get me wrong, it's still got gremlins, but that's why I bought it.

Strangest thing. I went to raleigh.craigslist.com and searched for mercedes and the page loaded right up. Before that it just sat there...

Anyway, I don't see why it wouldn't be legit, so long as it's got a clear non-salvage title.

As nice as the W126 is, they don't really go for much.

The problem might be that he's a "newer" tech like me who's used to the luxury of OBDII, factory scantools and electronics. I didn't know what half the crap was under the hood when I first took off the air cleaner on my '85, but for me it's a fun, rewarding hobby. For him it could just be an albatross that he thought he could fix & flip real quick.

The difference between how these engines operate is staggering compared to most other vehicle manufacturers of the same or newer era.

well, he just called me back and said that someone is coming at 2:30 to buy it.

i just had no idea they went for so little money now. oh well, i guess since we all love the marque so much our sense of value for the cars can get a little skewed. don't you think?

also, he implied that the guy sounded like he wanted to pimp out the car. what a dang shame...tinted windows, spinner wheels, etc.

Hey now, nothing wrong with tinting the windows - it's pretty much a necessity if you live in South Texas. Spinners, though - that's pretty weak.

The '80's SEL's and SEC's can be problematic. Timing guide issues, '70's style fuel injection (yeah, yeah, I know you guys are all claiming the Bosch CIS is a "great" system when properly set up and maintained but quite frankly, once it's been neglected it's a piece of crap!), aluminum block and heads, low fuel mileage (compared to later FI cars) and simple age has driven the values of a great automobile down to almost nothing.

I had a non-running '85 500SEL delivered to my house for $300. Interior great, paint's faded (hey, welcome to the desert Southwest), new 15" tires on "disk" rims (all 5 of the original 14"X6.5" rims were in the trunk), service records dating back to 1992, 168K miles, even came with a half tank of the nasty old gas which was the reason why it was sitting since 2006.

Fuel distributor, injectors, pump, WUR and everything else fuel related was trashed. In order to get it back to stock running condition I'd be looking at over $1500 and I'd STILL be needing the chain guides, sub-frame bushings and who knows what else.

The car works for me because I was looking for a project car to Megasquirt. I have the time, knowledge, experience and the desire to play with it.

Somebody looking for a "driver" isn't going to value the car the way I look at it, hence the low resale values.

For about the 3K buying one of these "bargains" will cost you, you can get a much newer ride with all the added safety features and mileages.

My dad and I have managed to buy a nearly mint W126 that only had a non-running (well, it ran....but it used more oil than fuel ) for $750.....there's deals to be had if one looks long enough. Aside from the drivers seat and a klima issue, the car is great.....we just put a new engine in it, that was 10,000 miles ago (last fall).
