Difference between 280E & 300E W124 ?

Hello, I could not find the answer in archives.

W124, 280E and 300E, what is the difference?

Thanks.:)

I believe the US cars are either 260E or 300E. There was a 300E 2.8 in the early 90's.

the 2.6 L or 2.8 L engines are little smaller. I think there are less standard equipments on the 260E or 300E 2.8. If I remember right, even the transmission and differential are a bit smaller in the 260E or 300E 2.8.

Chances are you are not going to see a much lower price on the 260E or 300E 2.8. I suggest you look for a 300E and there are plenty of them around.

Thanks, my friend in Irvine Calif. has a 280E W124.
I'm 99% sure it is a 280E and not a 260E.
I saw it yesterday and read the badge.

I'm not price shopping, just curious to know about the mechanical
differences since I was not aware of the 280E W124.
I do believe it is U.S. model since I'm pretty sure he bought it new
in southern Calif.

Cheers.

No, we never got a 124 chassis badged 280E in the U.S. The 300E 2.6 has a smaller variant of the M103 engine - about 155HP I think. The 300E 2.8 has the M104, very much the same engine as used in the C280. It has 195HP. In both cases the cars were decontented a bit - MBtex interiors standard, no headlight washers, optional sunroofs - that kind of thing.

In Asia, we have the E280 W124 Masterpiece. It comes with a 104 engine, with a slightly refined body-look.

popeye

Well, blow me down!!!
or better yet , pick me up!!

That car may have been a 260E then.

Anyway that's a great reference list for
W124 cars.

THANKS.

You can print your own list

Greetings,

If you are interested in what year what chassis had what engine go to thebenzbin.com and look at their chassis/engine htm. It basically lists all the benz's , what chassis and engine they contained and years of production.

hey ymsin,
you think you can get an "E280" trunk badge? technically, my car is the US equivalent in the w124 series and it would confound enough people to be fun. my trunk is debadged at the moment but i could put on one of those. it would be not badge upgrading but "right-grading" as i took off the 300E that was there...
