1994 e320 transmission slippage

My e320 transmission started slipping when in drive from a stop. If I put it into 2nd gear it goes with no problem I checked the fluid level and it was a quart low so I added up to the mark but still have the same problem. The fluid doesn't look burnt and it makes no funny noises. Should I do a service on the tranny or is this transmission toast? Thanks for any advice.

When was the last fluid and filter change done?

Are you using the correct fluid for your transmission?

What is your mileage? - this will tell us a lot.

Was the transmission servicing done on schedule?

We need to know these questions to give us an idea.

That being said, it is difficult to know if the tranny is toast or not, there could be many different factors. You could drop the pan and see if there are bits of metal or plastic/rubber in there. Also, you can remove your filter and open it up. See if any of the debris is trapped in there. This will tell you if you have an internal wear problem with your clutches or not.

I have a problem with no reverse. The pan turned out clean, but there was little material in the filter, which shows that at least my reverse clutch is worn. Then I knew the problem was in the transmission, which I am having overhauled right now.

If you are going to have a shop do this, make sure you are right there and watch it. The shop owner told me to come and watch for myself. That is what I did. I wouldn't have it any other way. There are many dishonest places (most are) and they will cheat you. Some will even throw in metal shavings into the pan. Unlike repair shops, transmission places will typically only see the customer once. Watch out. Go to a recommended place (AAA).

Thanks. Don't know when it was last flushed. 308,000. I added a quart of plain old Dexron. I hear you about the transmission shops, yikes. I'm the third owner of this car and have had it for a year. I got it from a good local MB guy. He had gone through it before selling it to me and it was owned by a doctor here and very well taken care of though I don't have most of the service records. It is in very nice shape. I had to replace the wiring harness after I got it but it has been great otherwise. The mechanic says that it being a quart low shouldn't have hurt it, and that he'd be glad to drop the pan and have a look but he thinks that if it is slipping like it is then it's toast. I am hesitant to go out and buy another transmission until I'm sure. I've had old Saabs that you's swear were dead but it was really just a fluid issue.

Sounds like excessive clearance on the B2 band OR a worn teflon seal on the piston that applies that B2 band.

That issue can be repaired in the car.

That sounds more like it. Thanks. You wouldn't happen to know where I can see a blow up picture of the transmission would you? And are the parts readily obtainable?
