1996 SL600 oil pan sump sealant???
 

I recently replaced the oil pan sump and gasket on my 1996 SL600. I'm kind of disappointed that it does appear to be leaking. Its not dripping on the floor but it is very wet. I used a new sump and new gasket with no sealer.

It occurs to me now that this sump is below the oil level and therefore is exposed to a head of oil pressure at all times. Is there a recommended sealant for this gasket. Also this gasket is very expensive $90.00 so I'm wondering about using it over again with a sealant. Since it only has been in the car about 6000 miles I'm expecting it to come off in one piece. The sump is very accessible in my car.

the only sealent we use that has never been an issue is called ( The Right Stuff ) it is in stores like auto zone and alike

does not come in a tube only in a pressure can about $17.00 bucks and it willl if the gasket comes off in some what one piece do what you need

cleaning the gasket with lacquer thinner and with a paper towell no rags the lint and rag parts coming off will end up in the oil pump - paper will just disappear

it has sealed some of the toughest jobs in the shop and even used it with no gasket at the race track and never had an issue < you will have to use a rubber hammer to remove what you seal with it as it really does the job -- jz

I just bought a can for $11 at the Auto Zone. You are right. It is the "RIGHT" stuff.

the black MB sealant is what I would use..003 989 9820 10.

On any oil sealing surface (front cover/oil pans etc) I'll use this stuff. Had the same problem w/ a few pans a while back, fresh everything and it wasn't leaking, but wet..which is a wee bit frustrating. On recommendation of a tech friend who's been @ it since 68 tried this stuff. Dry ever since!

Before applying any sealant, use some brake cleaner, gun scrubber, or professional paint prep/degreaser to completely remove any oil residue.

Remember, prepping is 90% of almost any job sealing or painting job.

I will give it a shot next oil change thanks. I prefer to stay away from things that wont disassemble. So I will avoid the Right Stuff.
