On the W124, these are referred to as "sound encapsulation panels" and their main function is to decrease road noise.

I agree about the alternator protection factor. They are awfully low and close to the road . . .

I would say I agree that it should be there, the car was designed with it there, then it should be there.

Perhaps its function is to help direct the incoming airflow in the engine compartment as well.

Without it the airflow might not get to places it was designed to.

I like the fact that my car still has it. It really is a pain if you remove the drain plug to do oil changes, I used a topsider most of the time, and do a drain plug removal once every so often for that extra sludge out AKA Larry Bible style, pull the plug when its hot and let it drain overnight.. :)

also note that small animals might want to climb up into your engine compartment because it is warm.

i know of someone who noticed a stench around the engine compartment of his car (non- benz). When he opened the hood, he found the !@#%^%& remains of a cat ...

I only go for the steel versions...I have a steel carter protection plate under my lowered C250D, have one for the 300SL24 and have one for the (soon to be lowered) 300CE24 conv.

My previous 190D owned it's oeil pan to the steel carter protection plate!
