1992 300CE front brake job coming soon!

Front discs are shot, so are pads, had old front pads that had more on them than current pads, so they went back in for the next couple of days until my new discs and pads arrive from Mercedesshop.com

I'll document the install of the discs and pads for you all.

look for it comign soon just after the holiday!!!

Thanks to Phil, My parts shipped today, his masterful parts lookup and quick fingers and quick mind, helped me choose what I needed right away, and I had em ordered within a few minutes on the phone.

Everyone go to partsshop feedback who thinks phil rocks, and chime in on my phil rocks thread!!!

Thanks phil,

Alon

I just checked my order history, and I put my pads in at the end of february of this year!!

That means that those pads went quick, and I don't brake excessively, but I do do 90% city driving.

Lots of stop start traffic too.

Does that seem accurate to you? 8-10k miles out of a set of pads?

My discs in the front had a lip when I installed the pads originally, so that might have been partly why, calipers having to use more pressure to put the pads on the discs due tot he thin discs.

I am going to have new front brakes soon, and my car is going to be better and I will enjoy it too.

The lip is at least 1/16of an inch on the outer edge of the discs, so I am assuming that has to be bad....

I plan on maybe getting some blue caliper paint, and doing some painting of the braking items, calipers and visible parts of discs (not braking surface...) while I am in there.. hmmmmmmmm choice choices..

Sounds excessive to me!

Do you rest your foot on the pedal ? Have you checked to see if the pads are retracting completely?

I think even a Taxi Driver would call it excessive.

1. Driving in LA in rush hour traffic - stop start as usual.

2. Never rest my foot on the brake ever, left foot is always on the foot rest, right foot on the gas and then on the brake when needed.

3. If discs were below spec, then pads would wear more quickly in anycase.

So based on that, I have new discs and pads coming, and will track the mileage from there...

Ohh yeah discs have some kind of slightly sticky like material on it I will use a cleaner on this before I install them to be safe, I am sure the pads would burn it off, but I want my brakes performing properly.

I might paint them and my calipers too, so I might hold out until saturday to do it...

But I think I might take the day off work sooner than later to do it during the day.. gotta free up some time this week to do it though..

I've got a pair of front rotors purchased ahead of time. The sticky coating is a protectant to prevent rust while the parts are in storage. You definitely should remove it when you get the rotors mounted and before you put the calipers/pads back on.

Not sure what to recommend to clean with. When the time comes I'll probably use carb/choke cleaner and then alcohol (the non-drinkable kind - no need to tempt fate.)

hey alon are you taking your car to enrique?
how much were your front discs?
i need to get my front rotors and pads done soon, not now but soon...what kind of a price should i expect to pay?

Ashman 06-05-2002 08:15 PM

I bought the parts and did it myself...

I never did document the install like I planned on. I totally forot.

I ordered from phil at partsshop/fastlane. I got ATE pads and Discs.

I think total cost was about $120-$140 max.

If enrique does it, it shouldn't cost too much.

ohh yeah the sticky stuff. I used some spray cleaner for brakes or carb cleaner I forget which, but it worked great.
