Thumbs down 92 s420 no start... My brother bought a cheap mercedes!

Pretty simple question:

w140, with the v8.

Confirmed fuel pressure at the rail.
confirmed spark.
Car cranks, *almost* wants to start, but doesnt.

Wiring harness is toast.. Like rotten.....

I have searched, and all indicate that a harness will cause a slurry of issues, but not a no start issue.

Is the harness the culprit?

Cap and rotor replaced to no avail..

Any ideas would be appreciated.

the harness is going to have to be replaced if it has deteriorated to such a point to cause issues to further diagnose.

But thats just me

are you getting a CEL?

Bad engine wiring harness could most definitely cause a no-start condition. Just depends on how bad it is. I would replace it, then go from there.

You have proven the adage "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes". In the future tell your brother to have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done so he learns about any pending expensive repairs. Very few owners are selling dependable, well-maintained cars for a pittance.

wiring harness

Dont jump in too fast....your car might have a good harness.

Do some VIN research, because I thought the biodegradable wiring harnesses started in 1993.

I have a 1992 300CE with no such issues. The wire sheathing is still pliable after numerous repairs and movement of the harness.

It sounds like you have verified a functioning ignition system and fuel delivery. Have you tried to fire it up with starting fluid into the throttle body? Is there old gas in the tank? Did the car start at all?

Eugene mentioned right off the bat that his wiring harness is toast. Some mechanics refuse to do any driveability dignostics unless a problematic wiring harness is replaced with a good one.

Try getting it to start/run on starting fluid.
