1990 300CE engine 104.980

I just bought one with 169k miles. The engine looks a bit weird to me with no front cover and the spark plugs are exposed, not under a plastic cover.

Are the covers missing or there is none? In EPC I don't see them either.

Engine is 104.980, is quite different from my 1996 E320 with M104.995, more like M103

I will upload some, just feeling a bit embarrassed since it is unsightly with gunk and paint flaking off the head cover Need to clean up.

Motor is quite different from your .995 engine.

It should have covers, and look something like this...

However, it is also radically different on the inside as well, which you can view here:

How do the two compare in your driving impressions?

my first impression is that the 300CE has more torque, accelerates better. Before the 1996 E320 I had a 1989 300ce too, but what a difference a year makes (1990 to 1989).

the engine models suggest similarity 104.980 to 104.995, one could think since they vary only in the second digit after the dot, there should be not much difference but there is.

Your engine is the early version of the M104.992 engine. It still uses the old CIS-E carried over from the M103 engine. It puts out similar hp as the M104.992, but a lot less torque, and develops peak torque at a much higher rpm.

Not exactly true. The .98 isn't very similar at all to the .99 series and that even comes to basic bore x stroke. The M104.98 shares much more in common with the M103 than the later M104's. Though you are correct on the hp and torque outputs.

So is it just a 3.0 liter M103 engine with a dual overhead cam and variable valve timing?

See my link above.

And pretty much. The Simplex chain was changed to a Duplex chain and the Oil squirter bosses were finally tapped for oil squirters. But the early model shares the 88.5x80.2mm bore x stroke of the M103 3.0L while the .99 is 89.9x 84mm giving the 3.2L displacement.

zr one, replacing the Oxygen sensor eliminated the hesitation/stumble from a dead stop in my 1991 300CE.

Found them

104 158 02 85 & 104 150 01 75

I have been seeking at the wrong group in EPC, they are listed under ignition system while I searched under engine assembly.
