W124 Expansion Valve Leak
Hi All,
I would like to try get my aircon working. It hasn't worked since I bought the car 2 years ago and I'm not sure for how long before that. I had it tested about 1 1/2 years ago and the guy I took it to said it needed a new expansion valve and drier bottle. He showed me oil dripping off the bottom of the expansion valve. I'm thinking of replacing the expansion valve and drier bottle (Fluid resevoir per MB) myself now and then getting the system checked again. Is this a wise thing to do, or can I cause further damage by not replacing other parts (e.g. condenser?) and running the system? I'm trying to avoid causing more damage to the system so is it safe just swopping out the expansion valve and drier bottle and nothing else? Thanks, Jase Last edited by Jase25; 02-04-2010 at 02:18 AM. |

I found a leak in the rear of the expansion tank - a very small leak. It was enough to leak out half an pint a day.
see this image and the area where the red coolant is coming from. ![]() It was a PITA to find as it was up against the firewall. |

Well if you are opening the A/C system, I would replace the rest of the o-rings....
