W201 center console
 

Was wanting help on how to remove the center console cover on 201 mercedes. Is there any screws or fastners to be removed in order to get it off?

Yes.. There are several screws.. Just start pulling and when you feel resistance you will see where the screws are located.

Are you talking about the zebrano wood that is on top of the console and surrounds the gear shift? If so, it just prys up, I think rear first

Yeah! The one where all the window switches are in and the rear view mirror switch & the fader switch. I thought maybe you had to lift the shifter cover up first, but wasn't sure if it would all come off without taking the shifter knob off or not?

Don't have to take off the shift knob. You unplug the switches after you pry up. Pry up the rear, then slide back. Very easy

Finally, got back to this site. The original address was failing to work. I had to use the peach address to be able to find it. Wanting to know if the Zebrano is a veneer or is it a solid wooden cover? I would like to be able to refinish it if it is not a veneer covering.

well, I also considered refinishing, but found one on ebay that was refinished. It was a real professional job. Make sure the switch configuration matches exactly because they are not all the same. I bid on mine and got it for $55. Usualy they are $75-$100. But to answer your question, I think you can do it yourself. It looked like the old varnish would come off with patience and the right chemicals

Thanks for the good information on the console cover. I am not at all familiar with the Zebrano wood, but I thought no larger than it is it would not be too big a project to tackle. I hope the wood is naturally that color so I don't have to match or stain it again. It has some hair line cracking I would like to take out. I have noticed some Mercedes walking by them, that look great. Yet, there are others that resemble the way mine looks. It might make a good retirement project!
