my first MB - with some gremlis

Hi All,

First this is my first Benz ( I know nothing), The vehicle is a 95 C-280. with 246,000 miles in great shape look taken care of. I have had it a week. Heres the weird part. My speedometer has started to not work - then jump to working. Tach was running fine - untill last night - same as speedometer - just stops then works . What should i look for ?

I also have a rattle down where the shifter is . I look underneath seems to show that a bushing may be missing where the shifter attaches to the transmission its like a vibrating rattle. If i slightly move the shifter to the right is stops - it is not a constant noise either. MB dealer says part is 6.00 - will a local transmision shop be able to fix it or should I go to the dealer?

Have a local reputable MB-trained independent tech perform the repairs on your car. It will less expensive than going to the dealer.

Depending on your level of comfort in doing your own repairs, the trans-linkage bushing (nylon) is an easy fix.

I believe by 1995, MBZ was no longer using mechanical speedometers, so I would start trouble shooting at fuses, connectors, sending units, etc.

Do a search. I think I have heard of the dead guages before.

my dead gauges were either a fuse...or the ovp... not sure if that model has an ovp

Whats an OVP ? What makes the needle move? is there a cable or something from the transmission. Why would it not work - then magically work.
